Según la leyenda nada se movía en el occidente del país sin la aprobación de Nacho: tenía en sus manos a las policías, pero también a los malandros que es mucho más difícil. El mito de Nacho llegó a tal grado que en una ocasión en que un alto funcionario del gobierno de Jalisco presumía que habían detenido al capo y de todas las monerías de éste, uno de sus interlocutores, con toda lógica le dijo: “Si todo eso es cierto, pues mejor suéltalo”. A Coronel lo “detuvieron” al menos cinco veces en los últimos cuatro años y en la última hasta lo intercambiaron por Diego Fernández de Cevallos. El poder de Nacho estaba sentado en la gran capacidad de fabulación que generaba a su alrededor.
La fuerza de un capo se alimenta de dos cosas: su poder real, es decir el tamaño del mercado que controla, su capacidad ejecutora, el control territorial, etcétera, y su poder mítico. Si Coronel era sólo la mitad de lo que se decía de él, quien murió el jueves fue, a no dudarlo, el hombre más poderoso del occidente de México. De él se decía que tenía control en las policías, el Poder Judicial, que tenia fuerzas armadas propias, ojos en todas las colonias, y acuerdos a todos los niveles. ¿Qué hace que un capo se convierta en mito urbano? El primer ingrediente es su poder real y su capacidad corruptora. No hay mito sin realidad. Coronel controlaba desde Guadalajara el mercado de “cristal” (metanfetamina cristalizada) de Estados Unidos y gran parte de Europa. Pero el segundo y más importante es lo que “los que saben”, en estos casos básicamente los políticos, los policías y los periodistas, dicen de ellos. El mito que se crea alrededor de un personajes de estos es parte esencial de su poder y de su impunidad: ningún policía de a pie o secretario de juzgado se va a poner a investigar si lo que dicen de la relación entre el capo y los altos mandos de un estado es realidad: lo cree y actúa en consecuencia. El gran poder del mito es que genera realidades, en este caso temor e impunidad.
La caída de Coronel es un paso importante en la guerra contra los capos del narcotráfico, pero poco o nada cambia respecto a los verdaderos problemas: el alto y creciente consumo de droga en este país y la violencia asociada a la distribución y el consumo. La rabia sigue ahí, buscando un perro que la porte.
